Offering You Hope After Abortion

Yesterday, I cried out for the Church to not remain silent on the issue of abortion. Today I’m appealing to the Church to also reach out to those who’ve endured the brutality of abortion, or are struggling with the decision of an unplanned pregnancy. It isn’t enough to stand against abortion; we need to take a stand “for life” and one way we do that is by offering true life and freedom in Christ to those who are caught in the death trap.

We must come alongside women and offer merciful and real-life solutions. They desperately need the truth of the Word and support that with practical help for their real-life needs. Ultimately, the greatest need for the woman suffering from the consequences of abortion is heart-healing.

The greatest need is a heart issue.

You may’ve made the choice for abortion because you believed you had no other option. You may’ve been pressured by others, or reacted out of fear, or believed you were doing what was best. You may’ve made the choice to abort without realizing the consequences or understanding that the fetus was actually a living being.

No matter how the choice was made, post-abortion trauma is a very common and real experience and can include:

Intense grief
Emotional episodes of crying
Flashbacks
Nightmares
Insomnia
Fear
Rage
Difficulty with personal relationships
Depression
Suicidal tendencies
Anxiety and panic attacks
Eating Disorders
Emotional numbness
Alcohol or drug abuse
Repeating the cycle of pregnancies and abortions

The truth is: We’ve all sinned.

I’ve sinned against a holy God.

We all have.

We are all in need of the healing grace and forgiveness that He’s provided through His work on the cross.

If you’ve had an abortion, the choice you’ve made is not beyond the reach of God’s grace.

If you are struggling from the shame, pain, and grief from an abortion, there is hope. The process of healing starts by recognizing that God is able to take your broken and messy life and do a redemptive work.

The real issue is: Will you come to Him?

Will you pour out the pain and loss to Him and ask Him to begin the healing process?

Will you admit that you’ve made choices on your own without seeking Him?

Will you confess your need for Him?

I love these promises from His Word. As you read these, insert your situation and know that there is forgiveness and healing:

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
“I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I did not hide; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD;’ And You forgave the guilt of my sin” (Psalm 32:5).
“He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion” (Proverbs 28:13).

If you are struggling with the guilt and horrific consequences of an abortion, please do not remain silent. The enemy has power to torment you while you remain under the cover of darkness. Bring your need into the light of God’s grace. Talk to a mature believer who can help you walk through this trauma biblically.

Hi Kim – An excellent, biblically based resource for post-abortive women is http://www.healinghearts.og. They offer an online bible study where you are paired with another woman who has had an abortion, has done the bible study herself and found forgiveness and healing, and has gone through biblical counseling training. They are truly equipped to walk a woman through the process of forgiveness and healing.

    • Hello, Jill ~

Thank you so much for sending this ministry link! I’ve changed the link in my post and am grateful for your input. The ministry I was referring to is no longer at the web address that I gave in my blog post, so I’m very grateful to find the help that “Healing Hearts” provides!
