Fall Leaves and Spiritual Focus

This is my favorite time of year! I LOVE fall! Everything about it! I love the crisp air, the cool temps, the gorgeous colors, the clear skies, the pumpkins and mums, the harvest parties with bonfires, roasted marshmallows, and steaming mugs of hot cocoa. I love the stunning sunsets and frosty mornings. I love fall.

I was born in the “Giving-Thanks” month, so for me, fall is always a time of reflecting and anticipating what’s ahead. I take stock of the past year and prepare for the next by asking God to confirm what spiritual focus He wants me to have for the coming year. Click here to read some of the practical ways I tackle this.

In 2005 my focus was cultivating “purity of heart” (Matt. 5:8), and believe me I realized how much I needed a purified heart because that year was filled with refining! As I prepared for 2007 God made it clear “trust” was to be my study focus and that this would be the year of taking faith to a deeper level. That certainly held to be true—I faced the threat of cancer three times that year.

This year my focus has been “Knowing God.” I enjoyed slowly re-reading J.I. Packer’s classic, looking up the Scripture references and really soaking up the content. The year has been rich—filled with challenges and blessings—and I’ve been rewarded through intimate connections with Him and gaining a deeper understanding of Him.

This year I’m inviting you to join me in seeking God about what area of spiritual focus He has for you in 2013. We’ve only got a couple of months so it’s not too soon to start asking.

Here’s a few questions you might consider as you seek Him for confirmation:

♥     Is there a passage or book in Scripture that He keeps bringing to mind?

♥     Is there a fruit of the Spirit that you are recognizing you’re in desperate NEED of cultivating?

♥     Is there a topic that keeps surfacing in conversation with others or in your reading that He might be putting before you for study?

♥     Is there a character trait of God that you’re curious or drawn to know more about?
Here’s a few suggestions of topics for study:

♥     The life of Jesus through a parallel study of the gospels

♥    The ministry of the Holy Spirit

♥     Spiritual Adoption

♥    The Atonement

♥     Thankfulness

♥     The Gospel

♥     Humility

♥    Prayer

♥     Faith

♥     Love

♥    Joy
The list of topics is endless really because there is no “bottom” when you start plumbing the depths of Scripture!

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!

“For who has known the mind of the Lord,
or who has been his counselor?”

“Or who has given a gift to him
that he might be repaid?”

For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33–36)

I hope you’ll leave a comment and share with me what your focus of study for 2013 will be!

Will you join me?

    Kimberly –

I like this post! I too was born in the month of “Thanks”. And this post goes right along with something our Bible study group decided to do last week…we call it a “buzz word”.
Given the struggles my husband and I have faced in our marriage this year it hit me hard that I need to give “thanks” to God for what HE is going to do in our marriage and in our lives. So, I made that my buzz word and am now studying “thanksgiving” and passages that go along with that.
My accountability partner has chosen “prayer” as her word. So for the past couple of days we have been e-mailing prayers and prayers of thanksgiving to each other during our work day as we continue to research our words.
I’m not sure how long this study of our “buzz words” will continue, but I have a feeling it will go well in to 2013! Thank you God for a new way to study Your word!

Prayer will be my focus. My prayers have been conversations with God and I ‘m sad to say a bit one sided, grumbling at times. I need to get back on my knees and be still. I am thankful for you and the invitation to join you in seeking God about what area of spiritual focus He has for us in 2013. I am praying for healing in a broken marriage.

    Hello Anna Marie ~

How exciting! Thank you so much for sharing how God is working in your life. I love it . . . “buzz words” ~ that is awesome. You and your friend are experiencing what Hebrews 10:24 encourages us to do for spiritual growth:

“And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds . . .”

To go along with your study on thanksgiving, you might want to check out Nancy Leigh DeMoss’ book on Gratitude (Moody Publishers). It is a helpful study on practicing thankfulness.

Please keep us updated on what God is teaching you!

    Hello Dee ~

Thanks for sharing what your focus will be in 2013. Prayer was my focus during 2009 and I found D.A. Carson’s book “A Call to Spiritual Reformation: Priorities from Paul and His Prayers” a very helpful resource. Also, Andrew Murray has written a lot of good books on this topic.

I don’t know what is going on in your life, Dee, but I am pausing now to pray for your marriage. I hope you’ll stay plugged in here and give us updates when you can in how to pray for you and how God is working in your life.

    Blessings ~

I am asking The Lord for direction in what should be my spiritual focus for the coming year. I will let you know when I have some direction! Love this post and the exhortation to hone in on an area. I have known you do this for several years now! Pray for me as I seek the Lord’s direction.
