Why does God call us to sing to Him? Why does song play such an integral role in spiritual battle? How does singing to God change the atmosphere in our soul?
These are just a few of the questions that have been running through my heart as I’ve revisited this beautiful spiritual discipline. I’m guessing I don’t have a clue right now in comparison to what we’ll one day learn, but as I’ve been thinking about this, God’s delight in music is quite obvious. I mean, He’s dedicated five books to poetical expression (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon) and songs are woven throughout His Word.
The Song of Moses crowns the Red Sea victory (Ex. 15) and shows up again in heaven, just before the seven plagues of the great tribulation (Rev. 15). Before sending Moses up Mount Nebo to die, God gave him one last responsibility, He told Moses to teach the Israelites a song that He gave to him. That song fills most of Deuteronomy 32.
Heart-songs lifted to God are heard throughout redemptive history. Miriam, Deborah, and David celebrate God in personal and tender verse, but also sing the graphic details of God’s power in display. God’s people sang in battle, sang when they were in need of water, sang when they were in mourning, and sang when held captive. Their songs communicated raw human experience and suffering, but at the core, these songs exalted God.
Singing involves our whole being: our thoughts, emotions, memories, desires, heart, body and voice. Singing lifts us from the bondage of hopelessness and transports us to the wonder of God’s presence.
Song is God’s language—it is where our hearts connect most deeply with His.
I believe God invites us to sing, delights in our songs, and is moved by this simple act of worship.
But what I find so astounding is when God sings:
[box]The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zeph. 3:17)[/box]
Does that not just blow you away?
He is the God who battles for us and sings over us.
He is an amazing God. Let’s sing to Him.
